On June 5th, 2025, the Young Indians (Yi) Thoothukudi Chapter joined hands with Soolal Singam, the sustainability outreach platform of Deep Cycle Hub Pvt. Ltd., to run an e-waste collection drive along with an environmental awareness program for World Environment Day. The initiative supported India’s national climate action mission for 2025, which encouraged youth groups across the country to organise e-waste drives, promote segregation, and carry out mass awareness activities.

Leadership Behind the Initiative

Yi Thoothukudi Team:

  • Mr. Arjun Shankar — Chair
  • Mr. Prem Paul — Co-Chair
  • Mr. Joseph Cascarino — Chair, Climate Change Vertical
  • Mr. Vignesh Varan — Co-Chair, Climate Change Vertical

Deep Cycle Hub & Soolal Singam:

  • Mrs. Deepthi Cascarino — Co-founder, Deep Cycle Hub Pvt. Ltd., and Lead Representative for Soolal Singam

The teams worked together to create a simple and community-focused model that brought youth, students, and citizens into one coordinated effort.

Collection Insights

Yi members registered their pickups through www.soolalsingam.com, Deep Cycle Hub’s digital scheduling platform. The Soolal Singam zero-emission collection vehicle visited member homes and collected a variety of electronic items including laptops, mobile phones, chargers, cables, and small household devices.

Total E-Waste Collected from Yi Members:

139.54 kg

All collected items were transferred to CPCB-authorised recyclers, ensuring safe material recovery and preventing landfill dumping.

Contributor Rewards

As a small thank-you, each participating Yi member received a reusable steel water bottle, a simple, practical reminder of everyday sustainability.

School Participation: Vikasa School — 157 kg Collected

The drive expanded to Vikasa School, where students were encouraged to bring unused or broken electronic items from home.

  • Total E-Waste Collected: 157 kg
  • Items Contributed: Old gadgets, calculators, damaged chargers, electronic toys, small accessories

Top student contributors received seed ball packs, reinforcing the idea that small, hands-on actions can encourage sustainable habits.

E-Waste Awareness for 525 Students

Yi Thoothukudi and Soolal Singam conducted an awareness session for 525 students of Vikasa School. The session introduced the students to what qualifies as e-waste, how chemicals from electronics affect human health and the environment, and the importance of proper recycling.
